CON Student Receives HRSA Nurse Corps Scholarship
College of Nursing (CON) student Jade Newton was awarded the HRSA Nurse Corps Scholarship. Newton, who is part of cohort 3 of the Bachelors of Science in Nursing Program, was one of 244 students chosen out of over 2000 applicants.
鈥淚 felt a sense of relief and happiness. I truly felt blessed,鈥� said Newton. 鈥淭his scholarship is important to me because it gives me the opportunity to focus solely on my studies and put forth more time into that. I have 9 months left in the program and finishing seems even more promising now.鈥�
The Nurse Corps scholarship is aimed toward nursing students, designed to help with tuition, fees, and other educational costs, while also providing a monthly stipend for living expenses.
In return, students work at a Critical Shortage Facility after they graduate and pass the NCLEX. A Critical Shortage Facility is a public or private health care facility located in, designated as, or serving a Health Professional Shortage Area (HPSA).
鈥淢y academic aspirations are to finish the nursing program here at 桃子视频, pass the NCLEX, then get into a new graduate residency program in labor and delivery in an underserved area,鈥� said Newton. 鈥淚 want to help close that wide gap between African American women and other races鈥� mortality rate during childbirth.鈥�
