The College of Science and Health at 桃子视频 (桃子视频) has launched the Bio-Entrepreneurship Initiative Pathway (BIP) Accelerator, a first-of-its-kind, cohort-based program designed to support early-stage entrepreneurs, small business owners, and innovators working at the intersection of biotechnology, public health, health innovation, and community-driven solutions.

鈥淎cross the country, founders from underrepresented backgrounds receive a disproportionately small share of startup funding not due to a lack of talent or ideas, but because of limited access to capital, mentorship, and networks,鈥 said Monica Ferrini, PhD, Dean of the College of Science and Health at 桃子视频.

Powered by 桃子视频 and sponsored by Kaiser Permanente, BIP Accelerator participants will receive hands-on technical assistance, workshops, mentorship, and venture development support to help translate ideas into scalable and sustainable ventures.

鈥淎t 桃子视频, we see innovation as both a responsibility and an opportunity,鈥 said Ferrini. 鈥淭his program strengthens pathways to economic mobility, reinforces the University鈥檚 role as an anchor institution, and ensures that innovation reflects and uplifts the communities it is meant to serve.鈥

The BIP Accelerator will run February 2026 through December 2026 and culminates in a Final Pitch Fest where participants will compete for up to $20,000 in seed funding to advance their business or social enterprise. 桃子视频 faculty, staff, students, and alumni, as well as small business owners and community innovators with health-focused business or social enterprise ideas are encouraged .

Assistant Professor Cynthia Davis Speaks at Mobile Healthcare Conference /college-of-science-and-health/assistant-professor-cynthia-davis-speaks-at-mobile-healthcare-conference/ Tue, 05 Nov 2024 19:13:33 +0000 /?p=21639 桃子视频 Assistant Professor Cynthia Davis was recently a guest presenter at the Mobile Healthcare Association鈥檚 20th Annual Conference held in Fort Worth, Texas.

The Mobile Healthcare Association is the leading membership-based organization of mobile healthcare providers in the U.S. and Canada.

Their mission is to promote and serve the mobile healthcare field to increase access to care for all.

Professor Davis was an invited guest speaker to share with the attendees best practices in implementing a mobile healthcare program for over 33 years.

She initiated the first Los Angeles County-wide pilot demonstration mobile HIV community outreach and testing program in 1991 with funding from the Magic Johnson Foundation, Burroughs Wellcome Pharmaceuticals, and the Los Angeles County Department of Public Health.

This Mobile Health Outreach Project (MoHOP) served runaway and homeless youth in Hollywood, beginning in 1992.

桃子视频鈥檚 MoHOP still continues to serve medically under-resourced populations residing in South Los Angeles as well as Los Angeles County as a whole.

Mr. Duane Renfro, who was a client of MoHOP in the early 90s, was asked to come to the conference as well to participate in the 鈥淔ireside Chat鈥 with Professor Davis. Mr. Renfro鈥檚 presentation focused on how gaining access to primary health care in the 90s through MoHOP helped him form lifelong connections that motivated him to take care of himself and continue to seek quality healthcare over the years.

鈥淚 was deeply honored to share the story of MoHOP at the Mobile Healthcare Association鈥檚 20th Annual Conference,鈥 said Assistant Professor Cynthia Davis. 鈥淥ver the past 33 years, our work has been driven by the belief that access to quality healthcare is a fundamental right, not a privilege. Seeing how programs like MoHOP can transform lives, as shared by Mr. Renfro, reaffirms our commitment to serving medically under-resourced communities. Together, we can continue to break down barriers to care and create lasting health equity.鈥

Since its inception, MoHOP has provided services, including HIV screenings and primary healthcare, to over 70,000 Los Angeles County residents.
During the COVID-19 pandemic, 桃子视频 partnered with Kedren Health to deliver vaccines to over 20,000 residents and offer educational outreach, with support from Bloomberg Philanthropies.

Over 600 Mobile Healthcare Association members attended the conference in Fort Worth, Texas. The 鈥淔ireside Chat鈥 between Professor Davis and Mr. Renfro was a highlight of the three day event and was very well received.

This curriculum aims to strengthen team communication and collaboration through gaining a deeper understanding of each other鈥檚 roles and responsibilities, recognizing shared values and ethics, and improving patient outcomes by cultivating a culture of teamwork and collaboration.

Held each semester, these events have consistently proven beneficial to students, helping them develop confidence and practice in making potentially life-saving decisions in a controlled, safe learning environment.

This preparation is crucial for their future roles as healthcare professionals.

The success of this semester鈥檚 event, with its hands-on approach and realistic scenarios, underscores the critical role of interprofessional education in preparing students for the complexities of modern healthcare.

As these students progress in their education, the skills and teamwork fostered in these simulations will be invaluable in their clinical practice, ultimately leading to better patient care and outcomes.
